Market Overview📈

In November 2020, the total iOS downloads of casual games in China reached 35.32 million with a 16% MoM decrease rate, while the revenue of mobile games in China reached 2.7 billion dollars with a 4.04% MoM decrease.

Comparing to the traffic peaks during the Chinese National Day holiday and Halloween, November was the month of competition for e-commerce.

In terms of popular game genres, in November, puzzle and arcade were the top casual game categories by downloads.

⚡️ Among Us! becomes a new game genre⚡️

In early November, Between Werewolfs 🐺 has ranked top 1 on IOS free downloads list. Between Werewolfs is a werewolf game that has the same core mindset as Among Us! with little changes to the scene and the story.

The unique playing method of Among Us! has gradually become a brand new game genre in the Chinese market. While Between Werewolfs reached top1 in the Chinese market, a similar game Space Kill has ranked 15th on the entertainment app download chart. Though infamous among users, their popularity has kept proliferating. The Among Us! type of games are still short in supply in the Chinese market.

⚡️More Top-Tier publishers focus on match-3 games⚡️

Match-3 game Puzzles & Survival 🧩, made by 37 Interactive Entertainment Network Technology, has made great achievements in the overseas market. The game combines zombies, match-3, and fighting elements to create a unique “hard-core match-3 game” which is attractive for a lot of male players.

On November 23rd, Tencent invested in Note7, a developer that has launched several successful match-3 games in the Chinese market. Neither Tencent nor Note7 has publicly talked about their next step, but from Tencent’s perspective, as the last match-3 game it has launched is Zootopia, back in August of 2018, this investment might be targeting the next match-3 game.

Meanwhile, the CEO of iDreamSky Technology Limited states that match-3 is one of their most important game genres and they are developing a puzzle+match-3 game Wicked Diary 🧙‍♀️which has shown great monetization ability in the SEA area.

⚡️Tencent’s First Japanese-style simulation mobile game Komori life has gained more than 4.5 million reservations ⚡️

Tencent’s first Japanese-style farming simulation game: farming simulation and highly Miyazaki Hayao-like art style make this game super attractive to casual gamers.

3D Scene mixes various interaction design: Except for simple farming, grazing, fishing, chopping wood, and room decoration, it also features activities such as cooking and animal hunting.

Large-scale online social games may be its future: There are several ways of interactions designed for players that have friends inside the game: Visiting each other, teaming up for an adventure, taking photos, and sharing them on social platforms. The producer indicates that in the early stage, the game will focus on farming but will gradually develop its social features later.

🎯 Mr.Bone IP Collaboration 🎯

Mr.Bone is a popular IP character on Douyin with 12M followers and more than 1 billion video views. After investigation, we found that 46.55% of the audience of Mr. Bone prefer shooting games. We cooperated with developers to create the game Mr.Bone and utilized content marketing to boost user growth.

Since July last year, Ohayoo has been exploring more publishing methods to help developers grow. Through cooperation with the creator of the IP Mr. bone, we have established a growth-focused cooperation mode, helping the increase in the ratio of organic downloads and combined the short-form video IP and casual games.

  • Revenue: Bimonthly revenue 15M+
  • Market performance: The total views of Mr.Bone’s Douyin topic reached 300 million+. The game received Douyin official recommendations and ranked top 10 casual game downloads that lasted for 13 days on the Chinese free downloads chart.
  • Fan base development: IP followers accounted for 30% of new users. Through Topview + IP official account contents + user acquisition, we have accumulated 420K fans on Douyin.
  • Organic install: iOS non-organic install accounted for 37% IOS total install, and 79% on Android, which enriched the source of user acquisition and verified the value of content marketing.
